In 80’s, game designing was a task which was assigned to one man, programmer. He used to code, design and test all the aspects of the game. He was like a captain of a ship in which only he sails. But game designing evolved rapidly from its primordial shell. Its most visible impact was the super specialization in the work. Even the term game designer is very generic in the industry as it gives no clue what actually he specializes in. To shed some light on it, we have enlisted the types of designers.
A) Level Designer:
This is the most famous breed of designers who are responsible for building level by level gameplay. They create the desired user experience by using props, creatures, objects, difficulties and enemies. There is even more specialization in this specialized segment too. FPS designers are different from RPG and MOM level creators and each type needs methodical knowledge of the mechanics.
B) Content Designer:
With the mind boggling popularity of story based games, content designers are in demand more than ever. They are the ones who pen the story or dialogs for the NPC or PC. Their job is often confused with the game writers, as lots of skills overlap like crafting a scene, maintaining coherence in the story. But it’s quite possible that one man does both the things.
C) System Designers:
They work on a micro level, i.e., on one small part of the large system. For example, a system designer might work on the player dynamics, skill moves or crowd, referee movements in FIFA. But it varies, as sometimes one designer takes care of all these aspects. It largely depends upon the magnitude of the game.
D) Technical Designers:
These are the people who have a strong back up of programming as well as designing knowledge. The onus of perfect implementation of the gameplay falls largely on their shoulders. This knowledge enables them to change the course of gameplay without disturbing the programming team as they know languages like Python and Lua.
E) UI Designers:
They create the interactive and attractive interface on which your game runs. This is extremely important as it is responsible for proper communication between the player and the game. It ensures that users will understand and will be able to operate the gameplay. They play a huge role in deciding what user will have as an experience and mediocre UI design is enough to write an obituary of your game.
