A company is only good as its team. Game designing also flows with this stream. A classic and expansive gameplay is not even a faintest possibility without a sound team work, particularly with the evolution of console based games whose canvas of graphics and aesthetic details are too complex and huge for a single person to paint. A single man creating everything that too in a short span is a fantasy which is almost impossible to replicate in this era.
The need of teamwork stems from the nature of the game, which is an audiovisual extravaganza. The specialization indeed runs deep. You need an ideator in whose mind original concept of the game germinates, designers to create the mise en scene, sketchers to visualize the character, 2D or 3D animators to give that character a final realization, light and sound experts to give the desired feel to the game, musicians to compose a theme which is apt for the gameplay, testers to check all the possible scenarios and find bugs if any, script writers to formalize the story and dialogues and art director who will monitor all the activities performed by these experts.
It’s more than obvious that the process has lots of workflows and iterations. But most importantly, there is a great dependency on each other and that’s why team work is the talisman for the real and successful game production. Without sprite artists’ completion of work, animator cannot do anything as they need an object to animate. Similarly, without writer’s complete output, light and sound artists as well as musicians may not be able to accentuate the wanted mood.
Just like a tasty dish which is the result of proper and adequate mixture of all the ingredients and spices, a good game is an amalgamation of the well synchronized efforts of every segment. Very rightly they say, “playing game is a child’s act, but developing it is not….”
